What to Expect When It Comes to Allergy Testing

Dr. Timothy Queen Explains the Simple Steps Toward Understanding and Treating Your Allergies
If you suffer from seasonal or year-round allergies, understanding what’s causing your symptoms is the first step toward lasting relief. At Advanced ENT & Allergy in Newport News, Dr. Timothy Queen provides in-office allergy testing that is simple, effective, and designed with your comfort in mind.
A Gentle and Precise Approach to Allergy Testing
When you hear the phrase "allergy testing," it’s common to feel a little nervous. But rest assured—at our office, the process is straightforward and minimally invasive.
Testing is performed on the surface of your skin, typically on your upper arm, using very small, gentle needles. These aren't the typical needles used for injections—they’re tiny and designed to barely break the surface. Most people, including children, find the process very tolerable.
If you’re concerned about discomfort, we offer a topical numbing cream (EMLA/lidocaine) to make the process even easier. Simply apply the cream a couple of hours before your appointment, cover it with plastic wrap, and we’ll remove it when you arrive. The area will be numb—so you'll feel light pressure, but not the prick of the test.
We routinely use this method for children, but adults are also welcome to request it.
Why More Allergens Mean Better Results
If you live in Hampton Roads, VA, you are surrounded by potential allergens year-round. From pollen and grasses to mold, dust, and pet dander, our region is a hotspot for allergy sufferers.
That’s why Dr. Queen tests for a wide range of allergens—to ensure nothing important is missed. This helps us develop a treatment plan that truly works, especially if you’re a candidate for allergy shots (immunotherapy), which can offer lifelong relief when formulated properly.
Depending on your case and insurance guidelines, testing may be spread out over multiple sessions. Each session takes about 60–75 minutes. These can be done on consecutive days or spaced out based on your schedule.
If we suspect food allergies, additional testing time may be needed. But don't worry—we’ll guide you through every step.
How to Prepare for Your Allergy Test
To make sure we get the most accurate results:
- Stop taking antihistamines several days before your appointment. These can interfere with your skin’s reaction and lead to false negatives.
- We’ll also review your medications. In some cases, drugs like beta blockers (used for heart disease) may be a contraindication for skin testing. If you take them for blood pressure only, it’s often still safe.
- If you have severe eczema, skin testing might not be possible. But in that case, we may recommend blood testing as a backup option.
When you schedule your appointment, our team will go over everything you need to know so you can prepare confidently.
Why We Prefer Skin Testing
While blood testing is an option in certain cases, skin testing remains the gold standard. It’s more sensitive, provides quicker results, and allows us to see how your body reacts in real time.
Plus, the insights we gain from your skin test allow us to create personalized treatment plans that target your specific triggers—leading to better outcomes and longer-lasting relief.
