Audiology Q&A

What is audiology?

Audiology is a medical specialty that diagnoses and treats hearing and balance disorders. The Advanced ENT & Allergy team uses audiology to educate people about the importance of healthy hearing and prevent conditions like hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus from getting worse.

Who should make an audiology appointment?

Make an audiology appointment at Advanced ENT & Allergy if you experience lasting changes to your hearing that don’t improve. That’s especially true if you:

  • Have to listen to the TV or radio at full volume
  • Can’t understand others if background noise is present
  • Experience ringing in one or both ears
  • Regularly ask people to repeat themselves

You should also make an appointment if you have difficulty hearing at work-related events like meetings, mixers, or conventions.

What happens during an audiology appointment?

No two audiology appointments are the same. The team at Advanced ENT & Allergy tailors the appointment based on the reason for your visit. The most common reason for an audiology appointment is hearing loss.

If you’re experiencing hearing loss or have ringing in your ears, your provider uses a tool called an otoscope to examine the inside of your ear. Afterward, they conduct a complete audiology evaluation, including measuring the pressure inside your eardrum, pure-tone testing to determine how well you can hear, and speech recognition tests.

After determining the cause of your hearing loss, your provider develops a custom treatment plan.

What are the treatments for hearing loss?

Hearing loss can’t be cured, but it’s possible to reduce additional complications and improve your quality of life with early diagnosis and treatment. Depending on the cause of your hearing loss, the team might recommend:

  • Ear wax removal
  • Endoscopic ear surgery (EES)
  • Hearing aids
  • Cochlear implants
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Speech therapy

Following a physical exam, a review of your medical records, and a discussion of your goals, the team at Advanced ENT & Allergy can make recommendations that align with your needs.
