5 Signs Your Chronic Sinus Congestion Needs Medical Attention

If sinus pressure, congestion, or facial pain keep coming back or won't improve, don't ignore it. Learn the warning signs that could point to an underlying condition requiring professional evaluation and treatment.

Chronic sinus congestion is more than an occasional stuffy nose. When nasal congestion lasts for weeks or keeps returning, it can interfere with your sleep, make it difficult to breathe, affect your sense of smell, and leave you feeling tired throughout the day.

It’s common to improve with home care or over-the-counter (OTC) medications, but persistent symptoms may point to an underlying condition that requires medical treatment.

Timothy Queen, MD, Erica Cherry, FNP-BC, and our team at Advanced ENT & Allergy in Newport News, Virginia, have expertise in sinus issues.

Take a look at these five signs that indicate you need an evaluation by one of our healthcare providers.

1. Your symptoms last more than 10 days or keep coming back

A common cold usually improves within a week to 10 days. If your congestion lasts longer without getting better or repeatedly returns, there may be another cause.

Chronic sinusitis, allergies, nasal polyps, or a structural issue inside the nose can lead to ongoing congestion. We’re here to help identify the cause, which is the first step toward finding lasting relief.

2. You have facial pain or pressure

A common symptom of sinus inflammation includes feeling pressure around your cheeks, forehead, eyes, or nose. The discomfort may become worse when you bend over or move your head.

Persistent facial pain, especially when accompanied by congestion, may be a sign that you have a sinus infection or chronic inflammation that needs prescription treatment or further evaluation.

3. You have thick, discolored nasal drainage

Clear mucus is common with allergies and viral illnesses. However, thick yellow or green mucus that persists for several days, especially when paired with facial pain or fever, may suggest a bacterial sinus infection.

While not every case requires antibiotics, we can determine the most appropriate treatment based on your symptoms and medical history.

4. Your breathing or sleep is being affected

Constant nasal congestion can make it difficult to breathe through your nose, particularly at night. This may lead to snoring, restless sleep, dry mouth, or daytime fatigue.

Poor sleep can affect your concentration, mood, and overall health. We can treat the underlying cause of your congestion to improve both your breathing and sleep quality.

5. You're losing your sense of smell or taste

A reduced ability to smell or taste is often linked to chronic sinus inflammation. Swollen nasal passages can block odor molecules from reaching the smell receptors in your nose.

Although temporary changes can occur during a cold, ongoing loss of smell or taste should be evaluated, especially if it persists after your congestion has improved.

Don't ignore persistent sinus congestion

You don’t have to accept living with chronic congestion. Many underlying causes can be successfully managed with the right diagnosis and treatment, whether that involves prescription medications, allergy management, or addressing ear, nose, and throat (ENT) issues.
